About Skinly studies

With the easy-to-use measuring device developed in-house by Beiersdorf scientists, you’ll be taking measurements of your skin in the mornings and evenings. By regularly entering data about skincare products, nutrition, sleep, cycle, and additional influencing factors, you will find out how they influence your skin. That means you will get insights into your skin’s moisture levels, oiliness, tan level, degree of wrinkles and fine lines and many other of your skin’s characteristics.

This is how your Skinly measuring device and the Skinly app work

Three different light sources and a specially designed camera optics make the Skinly measuring device a highly sophisticated instrument, allowing your skin to be looked at and studied in great detail:

Direct light

The parallel-polarized filter highlights the structure of the skin’s surface. With these images, the oiliness of your skin, for example, is determined, as well as the changes in your wrinkles. Radiance, wrinkles, and flakiness are revealed using direct light.

Polarized light

The cross-polarized filter, also known as a depth filter, enables information from the deeper layers of the skin to be represented. Along with skin redness, pigment marks and skin impurities are identified.

Fluorescent light

Using this blue light, we can make visible the causes of blemished skin. With this technology the development of bacterial colonization can be tracked, and the causes investigated.

With each and every additional measurement, you will get deeper insights into your skin.

Take part in the Skinly study

Sign up now! As a participant, you will receive skincare products to test, along with your Skinly measuring device.

Measure your skin daily and enter your lifestyle data to find out what influences your skin. You also have the opportunity to test some skincare products, which are not on the market yet.

Every six months Skinly participants who measure their skin regularly receive new skincare products free of charge and to be used as you like.

Should you want to discontinue, just let us know and simply send your measuring device back to us without charge and your Skinly account will be deleted.

How can I sign up for the Skinly study?
How can I sign up for the Skinly study?
To sign up for the Skinly study, go to the following link: To the Skinly application
- That’s where you will answer a few questions: for example, where you live, how old you are and whether your Wi-Fi connection at home is password-protected. Based on your responses, we check if you are eligible to sign up for the Skinly study.*
- Simply provide us with your email address, and you will receive an email with access to our web application portal.
- Answer the questions and complete the application.
- As soon as a new Skinly study gets under way (approximately every 6 months), you will be informed by email. You will then obtain access to the Skinly app and receive a parcel containing the Skinly measuring device and skincare products which you can use if you like.
* Please note:
The Skinly study is only available in some countries. This means you can only apply for the Skinly study if you live in one of these countries. Should you live in a different country, the app may possibly not be available, or we may not be able to send the measuring device to you.
For our Skinly study, we are looking for participants aged 18 or older. The technical questions (regarding your smartphone type and your Wi-Fi) are important because they constitute the technical prerequisites for the Skinly study.
Should your smartphone or your Wi-Fi not be compatible, then, unfortunately, you cannot take part in the Skinly study.

Who is behind Skinly?

Skinly is one of the biggest skin care studies worldwide and a research project of Beiersdorf AG. For over 140 years, our company has stood for innovative, high-quality skin and personal care, as well as for breakthrough skin research. In an international team of experts from data science, biology, physics and informatics at our global Beiersdorf research center in our Hamburg headquarters, we are constantly working on upgrading Skinly for our participants. Together with you, we want to understand skin even better and to provide you with a more detailed insight into your skin, as well as how it is developing. By doing so, influences of your life’s circumstances (e.g diet, hormones, sleep, …) can be elucidated, and, with this knowledge, enable you to better care for your skin.
I want to delete my Skinly account.

You are a participant in the Skinly study and wish to discontinue with the study? That really is a shame. However, we will, of course, help you to delete your account.
Please access your Skinly app and in the menu select the option “Settings” > "delete account”. Should you have difficulty opening the Skinly app, you can request the deletion of your account at the Skinly Support Center).
Please note: Send your Skinly measuring device to us together with the return form included in the Skinly starter pack within the next 10 days. The device is on loan to you from Beiersdorf AG. Should you not be able to find the return form, please contact the Skinly Support Team. Only when we have received the measuring device at Beiersdorf can the relevant data be deleted. You will find further information in the data protection documents for study participation and for the app.
